Rock I - Outdoor Climbing Fundamentals

Learn the skills necessary to climb outside! With a focus on risk management, this course covers the following topics:

  • Technical Skills (Knots and Hitches​, Belaying, Rappelling, Anchor Building, and Cleaning Anchors)

  • Equipment Selection, Care, Inspection, and Retirement

  • Decision Making

  • Minimizing Risk

  • Ethics & Access
     

​The course is taught by American Mountain Guides Association certified instructors with a ratio no greater than 5 students per instructor. The course is taught in two evening classroom sessions and two full weekend days outdoors (20 hours of total instruction time). InsideOut will provide all technical equipment. Cost for the course is $150 per person.

*Please note, this is not a course on climbing movement or strength. That is, it does not address the physical aspects of climbing, but instead is designed to develop students' technical skills to minimize risk when climbing outdoors.

Cost
  • Experience climbing at a gym or outside. Can be guided days.

  • Belay experience.

Rock II - Traditional Lead Climbing Fundamentals

With a strong focus on gear placement and natural anchor building, this course provides a foundation for traditional lead climbing, this course covers the following topics:

  • Building Natural Anchors

  • Gear Placement

  • Multipitch Climbing

  • Advanced Movement Techniques

  • Minimizing Risk

  • Ethics & Access

The content of this course builds upon the skills taught in the Outdoor Climbing Fundamentals course. This course consists of 20 hours of instruction over two weekday nights and two full weekend days outside focused on experiential learning in an controlled environment, and one on one instructor feedback.

  • Lead climbing experience - can be indoor or outdoor.

Refresher - Rock I - Outdoor Climbing Fundamentals

The Rock I Refresher course is a single day outdoors reviewing skills and concepts learned in the Outdoor Climbing Fundamentals course including building and cleaning anchors, and rappelling. With an emphasis on hands-on practice and individual feedback.

Prerequisites
  • Successful completion of Rock I - Outdoor Climbing Fundamentals, or equivalent experience.

Cost

$75/person for one full day in the field
